Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham Boys’ School – School Captains

SchoolCaptains

Honours Board in the School hall listing School Captains since 1930. Anthony Sargeant, Tony, remembers the sign-writer coming once a year to update this and the other honours board. Done in situ he would climb a step ladder and paint the name in with a yellow sticky paint before applying the gold leaf. In 1960 Tony took the school photographs including the school prefects with Mr Goddard the Headmaster. In that year there were joint school captains as can be seen on the board, Paul Clements and Adrian Moss.

I remember the names being applied to that board – as well as those who went to Oxbridge. Can’t say I ever bought into the whole ‘leaders of the future’ ethos of the school, but it instilled in me an excellent education whch has stood the test of time and opened many doors, in spite of my rejection of it.

    • Interesting comment. I was there from 1955-62 under the headship of Mr Goddard – he retired I think in 1962.
I do remember him telling us that we were lucky – we were the top of 5% of the countries children and we should use our abilities to benefit others. Mr Goddard was only the 3rd Headmaster in the schools history – quite remarkable really.
I thought him a good man – though he was exasperated with me I think.
When were you at the school?

I think that Clewley became head in 1961, having served a short period as Deputy. When he became Head he obviously bought a new gown. His previous one I recall was effectively a ‘bum freezer’, there being only limited material running down the back, and what remained was ripped and torn. My brother, who was at Aske’s before me in the ‘50’s, said that on one occasion Clewley left the classroom for a short period (a gasper perhaps) with his old gown still on the chair. One of the boys got up and started tearing more of the gown. Clewley apparently never noticed.

In 1966 he gave me a personal cheque for two pounds as prize for something that I had done. Not a small sum for an eighteen year old at that time. Naturally, I cashed it, probably spending much of it on fags and booze. Now how I wish that I had kept it as a souvenir.

You have written some great stuff Tony. Thank you very much, Memory Lane never fails to beckon me, but can often disappoint. Not so with your writing.

I was thinking recently about my alma mater and found these interesting comments on line.
I was a student there from 1962 – 1966 under Mr F Clewley tenure. I was appointed the only official school vice captaining 1966 before attending medical school in Ireland. I subsequently got my specialist degree and settled in Canada.
I’ve been retired for 6 years now.
Wonder where Roger Bonner is today.
    Great memories.
