Ancient Yew Tree on Wenlock Edge

dscf1916

This ancient Yew tree was photographed by Anthony Sargeant just off the foot path that runs along the top of Wenlock Edge in Shropshire, England. It has a diameter in excess of two metres and must have grown undisturbed in its remote location for hundreds if not thousands of years.

Shropshire sunset

img_4355

This splendid Shropshire sunset was photographed by Anthony Sargeant from his home in the Corve Valley at 4pm on the 14th December 2016. Looking out across the meadows that surround the house the outline of the ancient oaks that abound in the area can be seen silhouetted against the sky. It is a very quiet and beautiful part of the world with its ever changing seasons.

Baked Cromer Crab with Gratin Topping

img_4329

Anthony Sargeant likes to prepare and cook this dish using fresh crab. Ideally a hen (female) crab because you get tasty brown meat from the body as well as the white claw meat (though somewhat less of that). Although Shropshire is a long way from the sea it is possible to buy live crab and much else at the Indoor Bullring Market in Birmingham. The crab dish is a slight variation on a Rick Stein recipe in his book Seafood Lovers’ Guide (highly recommended). Baked in dish for convenience (rather than putting it back into shells) it is topped with the gratin mixture and finished under the grill. it is served with a simple salad. A Large crab will yield enough meat for four portions and if you only use half it can be put in fridge for a day or two and reheated.

Andy Pandy and the BBC

andy-pandy_0005

This Christmas annual was published in 1960 linked to the successful toddlers television programme Andy Pandy. Anthony Sargeant found it among some boxes of books that he bought at auction to donate to the Oxfam bookshop. In fact only a small number of Andy Pandy episodes were ever made but because as each generation of toddlers went off to school there was a new generation coming along the BBC could just keep showing the same episodes. Tony has some slight personal connection insofar as Gladys Whitred who was a professional singer of some note and contributed to ‘Watch with Mother’ including Andy Pandy (and ‘Listen with Mother’ on the wireless) was the wife of  Wilf Hawkins, Tony’s Housemaster, Art teacher, and Ist XV Rugby team coach when Tony was a pupil at Haberdashers’ Aske’s in South London.

Anthony Sargeant took this photograph of his friend Mark Baxter on the beach at Bracklesham Bay in Sussex on the English South coast in 1963. Tony who was working at Bellingham Open Air swimming Pool in South London made a day trip to visit his friends bringing Barbara (Bats) Attridge a librarian friend of the boys (Mark Baxter, Bob Tweddle, and Steve Lee) and driving down in his 1936 Ford 10. The Three boys had taken vacation jobs working at the Bracklesham Bay Hotel. All of the boys and Tony went to Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School in South London.

Omelette Arnold Bennett – piping hot and ready to serve

Anthony Sargeant cooked this omelette a few nights ago for supper using a recipe adapted from Rick Stein’s useful book ‘Sea Food Lovers’ Guide’. Finished under a very hot grill this is a very simple dish to make. Naturally smoked haddock is poached in milk and then flaked when cool enough to handle removing any […]
