Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland

This black and white photograph was taken by Anthony Sargeant during a visit to the Cairngorms made in the summer of 1959. It shows the pass called the Lairig Ghru that divides the massif into two blocks. The two week camping trip was undertaken by the members of the newly formed Explorers’ Club of Haberdashers’Aske’s Boys’ School in South London. Led by two inspirational teachers Mr Arthur Grant and Mr Jock Gordon a group of about 20 boys camped on the south side of the Lairig Ghru for most of the two weeks, climbing all of the Cairn Gorm mountains during that time, and then walked out through the Lairig Ghru pass, camping overnight by the Pools of Dee at the summit of the pass and then down through the Rothiemurchus Forest to Aviemore.
