Washing an antique rug on a sunny day

IMG_3680

Anthony J Sargeant washed this 19th Century Caucasian  (Talish Area) large rug on a sunny day at his home in Shropshire, UK. There are two major considerations with doing this the first is after using neutral detergent making sure that it is all rinsed out of the fabric. This was achieved here by constructing a shallow tank with a large tarpaulin and poles underneath around the edge of the rug allowing for repeated rinses until the detergent was removed. The second problem is you do need hot sunny days to ensure that the rug is totally dry.
